“Come on, Chief,” Joe argued. “This is my case. I found the body, and Shannon was one of my best friend’s sisters.”

“You’re too close,” the chief explained. “Surely you see that.”

“How? I haven’t seen Shannon in years. That’s enough distance,” Joe said.

“You’re good friends with at least one suspect, and technically, you’re a suspect, too.”

Joe stood abruptly. “What are you talking about? You know I didn’t kill Shannon, and Charlie hasn’t seen her much more than I have.”

Edward MacDonald motioned to the chair Joe had been sitting in. “Joe, sit back down.”

Reluctantly, Joe returned to his chair.

“Everyone close to Shannon is a suspect. And from what you tell me, in the last ten years, she hasn’t been close to anyone. We need to start somewhere.”

A knock at the door interrupted their conversation.

“Come in,” the chief called out.

The next moment, the door opened, and Brian walked into the room.

“Thanks for coming down.” The chief motioned to the empty chair next to Joe.

“You want Brian to take over the case?” Joe grumbled.

“I still need you on it, but I think it would be best if Brian takes the lead,” the chief said. “And I’d like you to call your friend Charlie—see if he can get down here. We can start with him.”

Brian flashed Joe a sheepish smile and watched as he left the room. After the door shut again and Brian was alone with the chief, Brian asked, “Is it really necessary for me to take the lead?”

“He’s too close to the case. And it’s possible we might come across a suspect who’s a friend of Joe’s. He may not be objective.”

“Come on, Chief, don’t tell me you forgot about Danielle?”

“Danielle?” The chief frowned.

“Uh, yeah. Considering Joe’s feeling toward Danielle after she first moved to town, I don’t think you can say he’s the type who lets personal feelings impede his job. He arrested her for murder,” Brian reminded him.

The chief shrugged. “Perhaps. But I believe this is for the best.”

Brian reluctantly conceded and then told the chief all that Marie had told Danielle. When he finished, the chief said, “Joe seemed to think there was significance in the house being unlocked and the door not shut all the way.”

“Which isn’t the case.”

“And we can’t tell Joe. Another reason I need you to be lead on this. I can’t have Joe follow useless clues because of something Marie does,” the chief said.

Brian chuckled. “You think perhaps our job was easier before we had all this help?”

“In some ways.”

“What’s the cause of death?” Brian asked.

“We won’t know until the coroner finishes his report. But it looks like poisoning. The way the food fell on the kitchen floor, and how the body landed, it looks like she may have been reacting to the poison and, in doing so, inadvertently pulled off the tablecloth. And it doesn’t look like anyone else was in the kitchen at the time, considering the only footprints in all that mess belonged to the victim. Nothing to indicate someone else was in the kitchen before Joe and Charlie arrived.
